Media literacy— that is, the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media in a variety of forms—has become increasingly complex over recent years. With such a high volume of information now at our fingertips thanks to smartphones and search engines, today’s students will need to become more efficient at filtering what they see and hear.

[i] Media literacy development goes beyond simply increasing the knowledge and skillsets of media consumers, however. Media literacy is the ability to participate in media culture in a productive way. This is considered an important element of education as modern society is flooded with media that has both positive and negative impacts on people's lives. The following are the basic elements of media literacy. This project will research how we have defined impact in media literacy, and advocate for indicators that support the needs of communities and youth at the margins of society. The project will run in three phases from June 2020 - August 2021 .
